Jane Clements of Clarks, NE passed away August 5, 2020 in Lincoln, NE following a brave but short war with cancer.  She was born to Florence and Robert Hume on August 24, 1939 in Thurman, Iowa Methodist parsonage. Therefore, she considered herself a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church. She graduated from Thurman High School at age 16 and then Barnes Cosmetology School in Council Bluffs, IA before opening a beauty shop in Sidney, IA. After meeting and marrying her husband, they lived in Decatur and Thurman, IA before moving to Clarks, NE in 1965. She provided childcare in her home for over three decades and was known to many as Grandma Jane.

Jane was a dedicated wife, mother, caregiver, and always put others before herself. She treasured time with a house full of people to feed, to share laughter, and make memories.  She believed in the value of service to others and was active in her church, taught Sunday School, helped to organize bake/plant/rummage sales, soup suppers, and lunches at the church. She enjoyed sewing, crafting, baking, gardening, canning, and was hungry to read any book she could put in her hands.

Her children and their families feel honored and grateful to have had the chance to provide dignity, care, and comfort to her in the last five months. In that time, they were reminded of some of her greatest lessons: Take a casserole to someone who needs your support. Volunteer. Use the good China when you can, but don’t be afraid to use paper plates when you have a crowd.  Share a good recipe. Take care of your loved ones. Bring creativity to problem solving. Be a friend. Help a stranger. Teach someone to waltz. Bake for others. Find joy in simple things. Share your plants.  Marry someone you really love. Read books. Make a pot of coffee when someone stops by. Marry someone who deserves you. Keep a well-stocked pantry. Take time to dig in the dirt. Stand up for yourself. Send birthday cards. When you have a lot on your mind, clean something. Put snacks in your purse to go to the movies. When you are feeling down, know someone else may have it worse. Family is everything. Pluck your eyebrows no matter what. Be the strongest person in the room.

Jane is survived by her husband of 61 years, James; sons Robert (Catherine) Clements, Timothy Clements, Nathan (Coleen Mackay) Clements; daughter and favorite child Sarah (Richard) Chapin; grandchildren Carly Clements, Savannah Clements, Boeing Clements, Tavis Clements, and Margaux (John) Pinkston; great grandchildren Aubrey, Maelee, and Landon; siblings Jerry (Patricia) Hume, Dean (Doreen) Hume, Mary Hume, and Jo (Steve) Erwin; sisters-in-law Elizabeth Clements, Mary (William) Fisher, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and dozens of children she cared for over the years. She was proceeded in death by her parents, oldest brother (Robert), sister-in-law (Veda), and brother-in-law (Gene).

A very special thank you to the staff from Nebraska Hematology Oncology, Bryan Hospital, and Tabitha Hospice who cared for Jane with kindness, respect, and love.

A private graveside service is to be held at the Grandview Cemetery in Iowa near her childhood home on Sunday, August 9, 2020.  As an expression of sympathy, online condolences may be left at trumpmemorials.com.  The family has designated the Clarks United Methodist Church, Clarks Fire and Rescue, and Tabitha for memorial contributions.  Memorials may be sent to Trump Memorials and Funeral Services, c/o Jane Clements, 1600 West O Street, Lincoln, NE 68528. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
