Mark Michael Winter, age 63, passed away on June 29, 2021 surrounded by loving family. He will always be remembered as a kind, generous, smart, loving giant among men.
Mark was all that is good when we think “Nebraska Boy”. He was raised by his parents and 3 older brothers on a working farm in Eagle NE. Mark often spoke fondly of the many life lessons and skills that he learned growing up. The strong bond with his brothers Wally, Bob and John continued to grow throughout their lives. Tales of the Winter brothers are legendary and some of Mark’s most cherished memories. As is true for many smalltown high schools, Mark played on about every Waverly High School sports team. He was especially talented in Football, Basketball and Shot Put. He remained very close to his classmates throughout his life.
Mark was one of the lucky who were able to combine their talent and interests into a successful career and later as a business owner. After his early years working with family in the Winter Brothers moving business and as an over-the-road truck driver, he started Mark Services from very humble beginnings. He started working out of his shed on his acreage in Valparaiso NE to convert semi truckers to dump trucks to haul asphalt for road construction. As his business grew and evolved, Mark Services moved into its own operations facility in Lincoln NE and offered refrigerated truck hauling as well as diesel truck repair services. He was a respected businessman and boss. He always enjoyed cooking lunch on Fridays for his employees when they picked up their paycheck.
Although Mark seemed to always be working, as many business owners do, he made time to enjoy life. He shared a great love for music with his wife, Kate. Together they attended many, many concerts (U2, Santana, Marshall Tucker Band, Robert Plant, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton – to just name a few) at many great venues like Red Rocks, Walmart Amphitheater, American Airlines Center and of course Lincoln’s own Pinewood Bowl and Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Mark and Kate traveled many roads across the country in his big red truck pulling a camper, riding his big red Honda Gold Wing and 4 wheeling on the trails of Colorado and Utah. Camping, hunting, fishing and attending Husker sporting events were just some of his past time pleasures. He loved to connect with friends and family around the campfire at night after preparing a great meal for them.
Simply put, Mark was a great guy! So many are grateful for his loving and joy-filled presence in their lives especially his many nephews and nieces.
Mark will be lovingly remembered and profoundly missed by his wife and best friend of 30 years, Katharine (Kate), by his brothers Bob (Lucy) and John (Joyce), brother-in-law Garey (Jane) Moore, many nephews and nieces as well as his dear friends. Mark was predeceased by his parents Waldo and June and brother Wally.

Kate: So sorry to here of your lose. Mark will be missed, our thoughts and prayers are with you.
It was with a very heavy we went to the visitation for Mark this evening. I drove part time for Mark for nine plus years. He always treated me very fair. He is already greatly missed.
Sometimes he would call me to see if I was close to being back to the shop. If I was close, he would say “I will leave the gate open”. I would tell him, ” I will get the gate for you Mark”. So Mark, I will get the gate tonight.
Thank you so much John.
Kate, So very sorry for your loss. Thoughts and Prayers to you and your family.
Dear Kate and family, We are so sorry for your loss. Mark was a wonderful person, he was a stand up business owner and serviced our owner operators equipment over the years. Mark was honest and fair every single time. He will be missed by us, he was always good to have a chat with. Take care, and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers in the months ahead as you move forward without your beloved Mark. Ross and Emily Faubel
Dear Kate and family, We were so happy to see you and Mark in Sioux Falls for Nick’s graduation. Jane and Garey have always reminisced of the fun times they had with you and Mark. We were so sad to hear about Mark and his great loss to you. Mark’s obituary is a wonderful tribute to his life. Sending lots of hugs and prayers. Julie Whitaker (sister to Jane Moore)
Thank you so much Julie! It was so good to see you in Sioux Falls. That was our last official outing we did together.
Dear Kate and family as well as his work family: I got to know Mark through my place of employment -Truck Services. We made friends right away from my first year of work. I enjoyed helping him keep track of all of his trucks an trailers and the yearly paperwork that needed to be done to keep them legally up to date and on the road. We have had alot of great conversations and laughs about recent travels we had both made. If there is one thing I know about Mark, is that he loved to travel. He had some funny stories to tell and always expected me to have something funny to tell him about my recent adventures. I will truly miss him. I expect for him to be watching over all of us – our own guardian angel- it is in his nature to do so. Such a nice, caring and humble man. He will truly be missed. My prayers go out to you all.
Dear Kate, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family. Just hang onto all the great memories you guys made over the years. My god grant you strength to get through this difficult time. Please reach out if you’d like to reconnect..
Kate
So sorry to hear of the loss of your soul mate Mark. I have known you for 27 years and whenever I have seen you and Mark together or listened to you talk about him and your life together, the love you had for each other was so evident. I know this will be a difficult time for you but know that your Metromail/Experian friends stand ready to help in any way we can. We’ll get together soon.
I am out of town so I won’t make the memorial service but Mary Jo and I send our love and condolences.
Thank you so much John. When you guys get home, ping me and we can go for lunch or dinner sometime. I would love to see you both.
I’ve only met Mark a couple of times and his smile was the first thing that I noticed. There are no words that I can say to make things easier. Just know that Kate and the entire Winter family and friends and extended family will be in my prayers and thoughts for a while to come. May God’s peace and presence be felt and comfort you for the upcoming days.
From Bentonville, AR with Love.
