Thomas Eugene Hogan, known to friends and family as Tom, was born on September 13, 1967, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Eugene Thomas Hogan Sr. and Sharon Jean Hogan (née Heddlesten). He began his education at Prescott Elementary School in Lincoln, attending kindergarten there.
In 1973, following his parents’ divorce, the family moved to Hickman, Nebraska. Tom continued his education in the Norris School District and graduated from Norris High School in 1986. During his time in Hickman, he was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 64.
After high school, Tom attended Vocational Rehabilitation programs in Grand Island and Lincoln to develop job skills. He later began working in the cafeteria at the Nebraska State Capitol, a role he took great pride in. While working there, Tom enrolled at the Lincoln School of Commerce, where he majored in Tour and Travel. A highlight of his studies was a class trip to the Caribbean—a joyful and memorable experience for him.
Tom later worked at Pizza Hut on South 48th Street in Lincoln as a waiter and dishwasher, a job he truly enjoyed. When that location closed, he transferred to the downtown Pizza Hut, and later joined the team at Valentino’s downtown. At Valentino’s, Tom held various positions and was honored as Employee of the Year in 2000—a testament to his dedication and hard work.
Tom had many passions. He loved reading, especially mystery and romance novels, and had a deep appreciation for classic movies and Hollywood stars. He kept a scrapbook documenting the lives and passings of famous actors. A devoted fan of Jeopardy!, Tom rarely missed an episode. He also had a great love for animals, especially his beloved cat, Chakotay. Tom passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025, from organ failure, while in hospice care at Lancaster/Emerald Nursing and Rehab.
He is survived by his brothers David, Daniel (Mary), and Gene Jr. (Jess), all of Lincoln; his sister Michelle (Aaron) Harkness of Colorado; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and several aunts and uncles.
Tom was cremated. In accordance with his and the family’s wishes, no visitation will be held. A private memorial service will take place at a later date.
